On September 2-3, 2019, a subregional meeting of the Information Workers of the National Trade Union Centers of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Eastern Europe was held in Brussels within the framework of the Union-to-Union project of the Pan European Regional Council.
At the recent congresses of the International
Confederation, meetings were briefed on these strategies and activities aimed
at achieving the goals set. Anton Leppik, Executive Secretary of the Pan
European Regional Council, and Koda Neverauskayte, Anna Salnikova, and Samra
Kovachevic spoke at the event. Anton Leppik said the world situation is opening
the way for a new cold war. Although the eurozone wave has grown in the EU, the
EU is doing everything possible to prevent the world from turning into a
battlefield between Russia, the United States and China. “Euroceptism” is
manifested in both Brexit (the withdrawal of the British from the European
Union) and the emergence of nationalist parties in power in some countries. All
this affects ordinary Europeans. People say they are tired of it. In Hungary,
for example, trade unions have no right to strike, while in England, authorized
representatives of the relevant bodies are striving to seriously restrict the
right of trade unions to strike. It is important now that trade unions aim to attract
not only their members but also other people to the strike.
Tim Nunan, Director of the International Trade
Union Confederation's Campaigns and Communications Division, spoke about the
challenges faced by migrants in Qatar to host the 2022 World Cup in Qatar gave
information. Alexander Shirshukov, Deputy Chairman of the Federation of
Independent Trade Unions of Russia, editor-in-chief of the Solidarnost
newspaper, made interesting suggestions.
He suggested
that the trade union representatives of the most developed countries of the
world should attend the next event and share their thoughts on the organization
of information and campaign activities: “At the moment we know almost nothing
about it. International trade union structures not only coordinate the
activities of the world trade unions, but also carry out serious expert
practices by working with various scientific and educational institutions. I
believe that such experience materials will be important for Russia as well. Collaboration
of trade union representatives from different countries around the world will
encourage active participation not only in the recognition of participants, but
also in the activities of organizations that are subordinate to international
syndicate organizations. ”
Then the head
of the press and communications department of the Confederation of European
Trade Unions, Julian Skola, gave information about the results of the CRC
congress and main directions for communications. During the meeting, speeches
were heard and discussions on the WFP's flagship campaign in the PASH region,
subregional initiatives in Eastern Europe, national campaigns in the CIS, and
global climate change.
