Sattar Mohbaliyev: "COVAX cannot ensure fair and equal distribution of vaccines between states"
29 Mar 2021
"Azerbaijan, which has always promoted unity and solidarity in its foreign policy, has once again faced double standards in the distribution of vaccines against COVID-19.
The COVAX, which was established in 2020 at the
initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO), is unable to fulfill its
responsibilities as a body responsible for the fair and equal distribution of
vaccines among countries around the world. Although it has promised to provide
a fair vaccine to 189 UN member states, current developments around the world
suggest that this commitment has not been properly met. The statement came from
MP, chairman of the Azerbaijan Trade Unions Confederation Sattar Mohbaliyev.
First of all, the MP said that timely, prompt and
preventive measures taken by the Azerbaijani government prevented the spread of
COVID-19 pandemic: “From the first day of the coronavirus pandemic in the world
under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, The necessary preventive
measures taken in a timely manner to prevent this have once again set an
example of the Azerbaijani model in this area. The timely establishment of a
special quarantine regime in the country, as well as preventive measures
prevented tragic consequences in our country, countries with advanced health
care in the world before the pandemic were in a difficult situation, lack of
medical equipment, hospital space, numerous deaths among patients. . By the
order of President Ilham Aliyev, many modular hospitals have been built in our
country to combat the coronavirus, and their commissioning has significantly
helped to increase the number of hospital beds in the country as a whole. It is
no coincidence that the world's leading countries and the World Health
Organization have praised Azerbaijan's fight against the pandemic. At the same
time, Azerbaijan did not spare its assistance to other countries in the fight
against the pandemic. As part of the fight against the pandemic, various
international events were held at the initiative of Azerbaijan. In December
last year, at the initiative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, a
special session of the UN General Assembly at the level of heads of state and
government on combating the pandemic was held. The organization of the session
once again confirmed that Azerbaijan is one of the leading countries in the
fight against coronavirus, not only in the region but also in the world. So
far, Azerbaijan has provided humanitarian assistance to more than 30 countries
in the fight against coronavirus and donated $ 10 million to the World Health
Organization. Our country was also one of the first countries to join and
support the COVAX international initiative for the fair distribution and
accessibility of vaccines. But in return for all this global activity, we are
still subject to double standards. Of course, this is extremely undesirable and
unfortunate. "
Continuing his opinion, Sattar Mohbaliyev stressed that
what is happening in the world regarding the distribution of vaccines against
COVID-19 is expected. According to the MP, President Ilham Aliyev's speeches
contained timely warnings: “President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham
Aliyev in his interview to Azerbaijan Television after the opening ceremony of
the newly built building of the Absheron District Central Hospital on February
1 touched upon this issue. He said that the ongoing processes in the world are
a matter of serious concern. At that time, we saw that the United Kingdom was
taking concrete steps to create a vaccine deficit in the world. The Canadian
government also supported its ally's efforts by ordering four times more
vaccines than was required. In the current situation, the issue of providing
these vaccines to the population of the world's poorest countries was a big
question. Based on this aspect of the problem, the President also called on
world leaders to adhere to the principles of justice in the distribution of
vaccines. The processes we observe in the world today once again confirm how
right the President of Azerbaijan is in this matter.
He also noted that it was unfortunate that COVAX did not
fulfill its obligations to Azerbaijan: “Unfortunately, many international
institutions are still unable to abandon the policy of double standards in
their activities.
