The tragedy of 20th January was commemorated
15 Jan 2020
As in every year, this year's event, organized by the Center for Gender Equality and Women's Problems of the ATUC, has been held on the theme: "The tragedy of 20th January is a page of honor and heroism in our history."
The
event was held at the Republican Committee of the Union of Cultural Workers
with the participation of chairmen and members of the trade union committees
and honored the memory of the martyrs of January 20.
Opening
the event, Jamila Sattarova, Chairman of the Republican Committee and Center,
said that on the night of January 19 to 20, 1990, without declaring a state of
emergency, the Soviet army launched military operations against Azerbaijan.
Hundreds of our citizens were killed, seriously injured and illegally arrested.
The purpose of this tragedy was to break the spirit of freedom and the struggle
for independence of the Azerbaijani people. But they could not achieve this
goal. January 20 was recorded not only as a day of tragedy and mourning but
also as a day of national awakening.
The
national leader Heydar Aliyev was the first to curse the crimes committed on
the night of January 20. He came to the Permanent Representation of Azerbaijan
in the capital of the Empire and issued a protest protest to the world. After
his second coming to power, the tragedy was given a political assessment by the
Parliament on his own initiative.
